Hello and Welcome

Victoria McTavish
Victoria McTavish Creative Designer

Hiya. I’m Victoria McTavish, Vicky to my friends. I am a surface pattern and 2D designer, living with my lovely family in the beautiful county of Monmouthshire in South Wales….

Design is in my DNA. I’ve drawn and created patterns for as long as I can remember. Sitting at the kitchen table as a child, I would reach for my sketchbook and special inky pen and create patterns, recording the world around me. To the endless shapes and patterns, and probably my mum’s frustration, I would add dynamic colour mixes and splodges of bold paint.

My roots are in graphic design, where my bold style has evolved, with designs organically growing as I play with line, shape and colour.

I have a constant drive to push ideas and make beautiful work and I am definitely at the front of the queue when it comes to being truly passionate about producing gorgeous surface patterns! My aim is to design in a way that is accessible to all, and that can be applied to a wide range of products from textiles to wallpaper, home décor, wall art, gift-wrap, and many more.

My Studio

The inky tree is my studio, where I can play with ideas, creating designs from the things that inspire me every day. My studio is filled with creative inspiration from beautifully designed books to encouraging quotes.

My love of design, from fashion and textiles to interior and graphics, provides the starting point for everything I do. With my creative roots in graphic design, my focus is always on providing strong ideas, which can be developed and used across a wide range of products.

Where do I begin? Well… I could be listening to a piece of music or walking back from town or even having a conversation with someone. Ideas begin to swirl around and I reach for my sketchbook. I always begin with an inky pen as I love the use of simple black line, contrasting against the white page.

I’m always amazed how beautiful patterns grow as line and curves come together and unite. Once I have plenty of designs to choose from I turn the computer on, and designs become patterns. Once the bud of an idea is created, colour is researched and added, making sure it blossoms. Just like the inky tree!
